Shotgun Challenge No. 7:
Avoid foods you see advertised on television, Facebook, Instagram, or online.

Food Marketers are ingenious at making their highly processed foods seem healthy:
Low Fat!!
Whole Grains!
No HFCS!
No transfats!
Natural energy drink!
Natural sugars!
Essential vitamins!

The best way to escape these marketing ploys is to TUNE OUT MARKETING ITSELF BY REFUSING TO BUY HEAVILY MARKED FOODS.

Only the biggest food manufacturers can afford to advertise their products:  More than 2/3 of food advertising is spent promoting processed foods (and alcohol).  If you avoid product with big ad budgets, you’ll avoid a lot of processed food.

I have personally noticed in the athletic and CrossFit world this happens A LOT.  The same rules apply - avoid all the hype and marketing.  Real, one-ingredient food will ALWAYS trump the next energy drink (Bang!), protein bar or Paleo muffins we see advertised heavily on our social media feeds.

As for the 5% of food ads that promote whole foods (beef, almonds, etc.), common sense will - one hopes! - keep you from lumping them in with the highly processed food manufactures.  These are the exceptions, not the rule.

So the next time you are at the grocery store and see bogus health claims - walk away and go buy the REAL FOOD.
